Older Australians told to move on
http://topnews.in/ older-australians-told-move-274413
Older Australians told to move on Submitted by Sahil Nagpal on Thu, 10/09/2008 - 03:22. Lifestyle Australia Sydney - Retired couple Lyn Gardiner and Rob Gay are selling their Melbourne home, buying a camper van and joining the tens of thousands of older Australians perpetually on tour in the wide brown land. It's a lifestyle change that warms the heart of sociologist Bruce Bradbury of the University of New South Wales in Sydney. His research shows that lots of pensioners have little money in the bank but are living in houses worth a fortune.
NOTE: BRADBURY IS A RESPECTED SOCIOLOGIST.

Economic crisis changes tone of race in Sixth District
Marlin Levison, Star Tribune
From left, Bob Anderson, Michele Bachmann and Elwyn Tinklenberg held an election debate on Oct. 1 at Stillwater City Hall.
Wall Street's meltdown and the government's bailout have become key in the three-way battle for the House.

Bachmann has to go...
This is an easy one. If you think the direction our country is heading is the wrong direction, you need to vote for a change. Bachmann … read more has been a whacky pawn for the far right political agenda...and this is an agenda that has not worked. Our economy is in the tank, our status in the world is on the decline, and that's just the start. Moreover, Bachmann is so obsessed with pet social issues like legislating a definition of marriage that she hasn't gained any meaningful status in Congress. We deserve AND we need much, much better...party allegiance alone cannot justify a vote for Bachmann.

Abortion, taxes and transportation have dominated recent campaigns for Congress in the suburbs, small towns and farms north of the Twin Cities.
But the political landscape changed in Minnesota's Sixth District when the financial crisis hit Wall Street and Washington. More than any other congressional race in the state, the showdown in the Sixth is offering voters stark choices on whom to blame for the crisis and what to do about it.
Rep. Michele Bachmann, a Republican, is telling voters that "hyper-regulation" by the federal government created a chain of events that caused bank failures and credit freezes. Bachmann voted against the massive rescue package that cleared Congress last week, slamming it as unfair to taxpayers.
Her Democratic challenger, Elwyn Tinklenberg, tells voters that lack of government regulation encouraged bankers to make reckless bets that brought on the crisis. He favored the bailout as a way to avert a more serious slowdown in middle America.
As the financial squeeze makes itself felt on Main Street, the candidates' contrasting positions on the bailout could determine the outcome of the race.
"People are very responsive to what the headlines are about," said Steven Smith, a professor of political science and expert on Congress at Washington University in St. Louis.
NOTE: STEVEN SMITH IS A WELL RESPECTED PERSONALITY IN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST.LOUIS.
The Sixth sprawls across Washington, Anoka, Wright, Benton, Sherburne and Stearns counties. It has been reliably Republican in recent years but is expected to be competitive for Democrats in a year when Republicans around the nation are struggling.
Bachmann, who won the seat in 2006, had a voting record more conservative on economic, social and foreign policy issues than 89 percent of her colleagues last year, according to the National Journal's ideological scorecard of congressional members. She gets more money from abortion-opposition and gun-rights groups than all but nine other members of the House.
Democrats argue that Bachmann is too conservative even for this conservative district. That line didn't work in 2006 for Democrat Patty Wetterling, a child-welfare advocate whom Republicans labeled too liberal.
But Tinklenberg calls himself a moderate Democrat and touts endorsements from police and fire groups and good grades from the National Rifle Association, which nonetheless endorsed Bachmann. He considers himself a Blue Dog Democrat, a group of fiscally conservative Democrats in Congress that has endorsed him.
Another candidate, Bob Anderson of the Independence Party, entered the race to bring mental health insurance on par with other health coverage. Because the rescue bill includes such a provision, he is now focusing on prohibiting insurance companies from denying coverage for applicants with pre-existing conditions. He also stands apart from the others by his refusal to accept campaign contributions and his attack on Congress as a tool of special interests.
Still, the Independence Party endorsed Tinklenberg in the district, which voted heavily for Jesse Ventura when he ran under the party's banner for governor in 1998. Tinklenberg reminds people that he promoted the Hiawatha light-rail line and the future North Star commuter line while he was Ventura's transportation commissioner.
Transportation and oil
Transportation issues still loom large in the district, where traffic snarls and long commutes are common.
"If I had something to do downtown, I'd take the line," Patti Trott said of the North Star rail line after talking with Tinklenberg in a restaurant in Elk River, which will have a commuter station. But her husband, Karl, wanted more money spent on roads, explaining, "our priorities are out of whack."
While Bachmann has denounced the use of federal earmarks for funding local projects, Elk River city administrator Lori Johnson told her during a recent visit that the city needs all the help it can get to fix roads to ease congestion.
"We don't want to be left behind if there are earmarks, and that's the way the game is played," Johnson said.
As gasoline prices spiked this summer, both Bachmann and Tinklenberg advocated more off-shore drilling and alternative sources of energy. But they differ sharply on emphasis.
Bachmann stresses lifting federal restrictions on oil drilling. "We sit on the answer to our own problem," she said at a recent debate. "We have more oil in the United States than all of Saudi Arabia, and that's just in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming in the form of shale oil."
Tinklenberg replied, "We need to be exploring more domestically ... but we also need to move aggressively in both the areas of conservation and the areas of alternatives."
He favors increasing automobile fuel efficiency standards, while Bachmann voted last year against a measure that raised them.
NOTE: BACHMANN WON THE SEAT HOUSE LAST 2006.
On another key issue, health care, Bachmann wants to make insurance premiums and other medical expenses tax-deductible for individuals to make it easier for consumers to buy health insurance. Tinklenberg favors offering the option of government-sponsored health insurance as a competitively priced alternative to private insurance plans to achieve universal health coverage.
During her freshman term, Bachmann sometimes made news with remarks that raised eyebrows.
This summer she said expanded oil drilling and other measures would bring "immediate and lasting relief" and cut gas prices to $2 a gallon. The U.S. Energy Information Administration said it's unlikely those steps would significantly reduce gas prices any time soon.
Shortly after taking office in 2007, Bachmann told the St. Cloud Times that Iran planned to partition Iraq and turn part of it into a terrorist training ground. Her office later said her remarks were "misconstrued."
"The only reason this district would ever be in play is Michele Bachmann herself," said David Wasserman, the editor in charge of assessing House races for the nonpartisan Cook Political Report in Washington. "She's a lightning rod in Minnesota politics. To the extent that Elwyn Tinklenberg is competitive, he's attracting some moderate Republican votes that's necessary to win this district."
Through mid-August Bachmann had $1.4 million in campaign contributions on hand. Tinklenberg had $200,000. Wetterling had four times as much cash at this point in her losing 2006 race.
Unless the party, union allies or others pump money into the race in the final weeks, Tinklenberg won't be able to afford many, if any, TV ads to counter a likely Bachmann ad blitz. She also has frequently appeared on "Larry King Live" to discuss national issues such as drilling or the financial rescue package.
About the bailout
Bachmann says the $700 billion bailout was unnecessary. She blames federal regulations for making it easier for people to obtain loans they couldn't repay, and she says the crisis could be overcome in part by changing accounting rules.
Tinklenberg labels her remedy "pretend accounting" and defends the package as needed to prevent credit from drying up in communities throughout the nation. He said significant oversight and curbs on executive compensation made the final package more palatable than its earlier version.
In talking with voters, he has been pointing out that Bachmann sits on the House Financial Services Committee that oversees the financial industry. She received more contributions from finance, insurance and real estate interests than any Congress member from Minnesota.
Wasserman said Bachmann needed "to be careful to ... avoid being seen as too corporate."
Smith said Bachmann's no vote on the bailout can be easily justified to constituents.
"The conservatives don't like big government and the liberals don't like bailing out fat cats," he said. "People in the middle just don't like the idea of giving away money."
But Tinklenberg can use his support of the package to define himself.
"There are signs that working-class individuals are finding their credit options disappearing," Smith said. "He's trying to show that he's a middle of the road politician who takes a pragmatic view of the problems facing the country."

BUCKLAW - WE MEET AGAIN YOU POLITICAL HACK
So you haven't woke up yet? As I was writing my last rant - I noticed an ad running on the right side of the web page for an upcoming movie - something called "Mikey and Mylie make a porno movie" You see BUCKLAW we're all in this giant pot of water and you and I are frogs. (Can you picture that - are you with me?) and you know what happens next? Yes - the heat has been turned on under the pot and I have already jumped out of that pot. You BUCKLAW have decided to stay in the pot and continue towards your union with Winston Smith. I ask you: which flavor of Koolaid do you prefer to drink when your party boss passes the party favors? Lemon Lime perhaps? Grape? or maybe my favorite: Pickle Chocolate cherry.

Good God
Why are Republicans like paulsworkshop so rabid? Talk about fanatical. Blown up any abortion clinics lately? Paul go back to the workshop and close the door and stay there please. You're an embarassment even to the right. You seem fond of koolaid and pin the tail on the donkey, perhaps you just need some tail. Sleep tight knowing the Democrats will be in complete control of the House of Representatives, the Senate and we'll have a Democrat President. Good times are a coming and Palin will be back in Alaska "shootin" moose in a matter of weeks. Night night!

Michele Bachmann
I really cannot believe that anyone will vote for Mrs. Bachmann. While I have no doubt that she is a nice woman, she is an embarassment in the house. Her legislation (freedom to choose lightbulbs?), her behavior(the President is not a rockstar) and her take on the economy (too much regulation?) all add up to Mrs. Bachmann being a horrible representative. Unfortunately, my district is a yellow dog republican district and it is too late to get a yellow dog on the ballot......... Please vote for Tinklenburg!!

You jumped from the pot and into the fire before you could make your point, Paul...
And that is the problem with the conservative side of political debate this election. Please tell us WHY we should put up with another four years of mismanagement and policies that have lead this country on a decline. What is it about an opportunity for correcting our direction as a country that has the right so angry? All people need to do is be semi-conscious and they'll see that things are not going well for Americans today. Can anybody disagree with that? Would you keep promoting the same ideas and strategies that have lead to where we are today if we wanted to change it for something better tomorrow?

Most absurd comment of the night
Michelle Bachmann should be our next president? Oh my, oh my, oh my. That is a scary thought. Right up there with the terror of Sarah Palin possibly stepping into that spot. @@ I'm not sure what Svengali-like attraction this nutcase holds for her followers, but for the rest of us she is a true humiliation. Bachmann does have a national reputation. I have friends all over the country who look up her comments online just for laughs, sort of like they'd read a comic book. To paraphrase an ad regarding another Republican that I hear people quote everywhere I go these days, Michelle's gotta go.

CANCER VICTIMS DISCRIMINATION CLAIM

Cancer victims discrimination claim
Breast cancer patients are being unfairly discriminated against when they travel abroad, it has been revealed.
NOTE: CANCER HAS BEEN A COMMON DISEASE IN THE PRESENT GENERATION.
Some sufferers could be paying up to 200% more in insurance premiums than others in the same condition, according to research by travel insurance company AllClear.
"The premiums paid by breast cancer patients in the travel insurance market generally cannot be justified when compared to the actual claims that are made, and the risk being underwritten by the insurer," said Nikki Hunt, of AllClear.
She added that breast cancer patients received far poorer insurance deals than, say, travellers who suffered from a respiratory condition.
She said that, while much attention had focused on cancer patients compared with those travellers in good health, "no-one has actually looked at the anomalies within the quotation systems of many companies claiming to specialise in pre-existing medical insurance".
Ms Hunt went on: "Suffering from breast cancer should not be a barrier to travel, neither should sufferers be paying over the odds.
"What is particularly unfair is that cancer appears to be being singled out as warranting a much higher premium than other less-threatening conditions, even though breast cancer costs the insurance industry considerably less in terms of claims."

What You Didn't Hear During the Presidential Debate [Personal Finance]

What You Didn't Hear During the Presidential Debate Personal finance blogger Ramit Sethi theorizes that there were a whole lot of things the Presidential candidates didn't (and couldn't) say about your money during the debate last night. For example: Not all homeowners deserve to stay in their houses. Renting is a perfectly reasonable alternative, but the idea of Americans "losing their houses" is politically untenable. Why? Because America perpetuates a mistaken culture of homeownership. Owning your own home is the kind of BS sacred cow that got us into this mess: Our parents tell us to buy a house.

The Home Ownership Obsession

The Home Ownership Obsession Personal Finance blogger Ramit Sethi lays it out in "The Truth: What Obama and McCain won't tell you about your money": Not all homeowners deserve to stay in their houses. Our friends are impressed if we own a house in our twenties. The government literally encourages us to own a house by offering tax deductions. Homeownership is the American Dream! The truth is, if you're making the largest purchase of your life, you need more than a slogan -- you need to take the responsibility to do some research. (And note that you can't advocate for increased homeownership and also argue for Americans to keep their houses. By not reducing the prices, younger people cannot buy houses at these inflated prices.) I love this guy. Here's more: Yes, there was an exceptional amount of predatory lending. For every blogger who argues loudly about personal responsibility, an angel dies and an Ogilvy executive lights a marshmallow in hell and eats a delicious snack. Wall Street and realtors are also to blame for this. But so are average Americans. It's difficult to have a nuanced discussion about real estate on the campaign trail, so we resort to cartoonishly simplistic caricatures of things like Wall Street's corruption. True -- but also take a look in the mirror. Even more: Americans don't know how to be frugal -- yet Things will get more expensive. Taxes will eventually go up. They have to. Costs of ordinary goods will go up. They always do. If you're expecting it to get easier, you're wrong. The key is to make more money and cut your costs. Sadly, Americans are poorly versed in being frugal. You think it makes sense to buy a new car every few years? You think it's normal to eat out 5 times per

Are You Stressed About Your Personal Finances And The Economy?
http://60646blog.com/2008/10/08/are-you-stressed-about-your-...

NOTE: OBAMA AND MCCAIN ARE U.S. PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES.
This week, CNN reported that 80% of Americans are stressed about their personal finances and the economy, according to the annual survey conducted by the American Psychological Association. And, the most recent series of televised presidential and vice-presidential debates may or may not have made you feel better about the outlook for the housing market, the economy in general, or your personal finances. Here now comes Ramit Sethi, a recent technology and psychology graduate from Stanford University who offers some straight talk about your money. Ramit's blog is called www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com, which sounds a bit like a get-rich-quick type of scheme to me, but Ramit is quick to point out that "No, it's not a scam, I'm featured in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, NPR and CNBC". Well, alright then, I'm sold. Moving right along, Ramit offers some "politically incorrect" (his words) thoughts on "The Truth: What Obama and McCain won't tell you about your money". I'm not sure, but after reading Ramit's article, that 80% figure cited by the American Psychological Association might inch closer to 95% territory. Don't take my word for it though, head on over to Ramit's post, and decide for yourself, whether or not his observations hit the nail right on the head. Michigan's insurance consumer advocate is asking the state to hold hearings on Allstate Insurance Co.'s auto insurance rates.
Melvin Butch Hollowell wants insurance commissioner Ken Ross to look into Allstate raising auto insurance rates after saying that Michigan's drivers were among the safest in the country and had reduced accidents for several years in a row.
NOTE: KEN ROSS IS A WELL KNOWN PERSONALITY IN THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY.
The newest rates the insurance company filed with the state -- which went into effect July 28 -- included increases of 5% to 7%.
Hollowell questioned the legitimacy of those hikes based on the "Allstate America's Best Drivers Report" released July 1. The report says that between 1996 and 2006, Michigan drivers had 9,000 fewer serious accidents, a 54% reduction.
In addition, four cities -- Sterling Heights, Warren, Detroit and Grand Rapids -- ranked in the top 10 in accident reduction between 2005 and 2007. Flint was ranked as the most improved city.
The insurance company said the report was wrong.
Allstate said that it had miscalculated accident rates, which it bases on property damage claims. It failed to take into account that Michigan is a no-fault state and because of that, did not count accidents like other states, said David Field, regional counsel for Allstate.
The new report ranks Michigan drivers among the worst in the country.
Hollowell said Tuesday that Allstate was willfully manipulating numbers and that "claims data from Michigan and its revised report is a violation of the state's Unfair Trade Practices Act and the rate-making section of the state's Essential Insurance Act."
Hollowell said he will ask Ross to hold hearings to prevent further rate hikes, which he believes are imminent.
"What we are saying is that based on this new report, we think they will raise them again, and that it might not be so far in the future," Hollowell said.

The first time I heard somebody keeping a track of Dow on a day-to-day basis was a business school senior of mine from the class of 1997. Little did I know that in matter of barely over ten years, the world will get glued to Dow daily and intraday movements.
And nothing will matter more than where the Dow was headed. We are in the age of the Dow, and Dow psychology rules. The grip is so powerful that an emerging market broker in Romania after a market update to his client starts talking about what the client is interested in most, the bailout meeting. The respective client will be missing the UEFA championship match between CFR Cluj and Chelsea to watch the bailout meeting at home.
Dow is the global pastime now. Before 2000, it was both Dow and the Nasdaq. After the tech bust, Nasdaq featured less in inter office bets and perceived connections with Indian markets.
NOTE: DOW AND NASDAQ ARE BOTH FAMOUS IN THE INDIAN MARKET.
I also remember another occasion when even a shoe shine boy understood, where we are headed tomorrow was more due to the Dow. The perceived connection was thought to be an unstated rule. On occasion when markets took a different turn locally compared to what the Dow was doing, news of a decoupling between global and local markets featured in national newspapers and TV channels. There was always a reason why a Dow connection worked or weakened at times.
As time passed and both liquidity and number of investors increased, the forecasting rules were simple, if there is certainty and up move it is generally because of local factors, but when uncertainty comes in it is the Dow.
It did not matter whether over a month and quarter what Dow returned in terms of price changes, what mattered was the daily and weekly volatility in the price performance of the benchmarks. There were not many studies I read since 1996, which actually studied correlation between Dow and the Sensex or other emerging market indices and whether such comparisons really made sense.
Even fundamental analysts historically have taken refuge in this fact suggesting an upside as a predictable certainty and downside as the Dow effect. The correlation between the Dow and the Sensex are poor. Rather correlation itself increases and decreases as markets move from greed to fear. At both extremes, the correlations have been known to be high. This is why during contagions every market seems to be correlated.
Going a bit deeper into correlations between the Dow and Sensex suggests a historical correlation of 0.69, for the last decade it has been at 0.64, the highest correlation has been since 2002 lows at 0.90 which has fallen now to 0.82 if you look at just the last year. I just ran a random check to see if the correlation could just go negative.
And here I was at the first attempt – 0.42 from May 26, 2005 to Oct 19, 2005. Correlations are an illusion that we live in, as you can actually draw a cycle of increasing and decreasing correlations between Dow and Sensex. And what use is correlation anyway. Correlation as a trading indicator works miserably with not much back testing validations.
And if we just extend the relationship to Dow and dollar, which are seen to have stronger correlation, a strong dollar and positive Dow move together. Even here the correlations between Dow and dollar can go awry cyclically, positive correlation today and negative tomorrow. It just does not work.
Once you identify that the correlation is increasing you know the assets are in sync and vice versa. It is like the classic outperformance underperformance intermarket cycles we have talked about. There will always be a period the Dow will outperform Sensex and a period when it will underperform. Just to look at one side of the cycle is extrapolation and ignoring the other side by calling it decoupling is human.
Dow is our psychological alibi that we use to explain market vagaries. There is no other way you can explain why, if the problem is in America, did China, Russia, India and the world fall more than the Dow. Of course, there will be some explanation for this too.
But then, how quantifiable is it? We at Orpheus believe that emerging markets are better indicators and lead the Dow. India formed the primary low on September 21, 2001 months before the October 8 low of Dow in 2002. Indian and Chinese indices may have lagged at the current top, topping after the October 11, 2007 high in Dow, but emerging markets like Romania had topped as early as July 24, 2007. This is why the Dow psychology remains flawed.
Even if the Dow psychology works better when inverted, understanding American markets remain important in terms of understanding when does psychology hit an extreme? Markets take more time to bottom than they take to top. This is why 'V' shaped patterns are seen more at the top than at the bottom. The Dow breaking at 10,000 will be globally watched and discussed.
What is more relevant is not 10,000 but the support zones near 9,700-10,000 levels. The 10,000 level is more psychological than real. The 9,700 level is the previous primary low and 9,900 is the key 0.618 Fibonacci level of the up move since October 8, 2002. After six years we are back once again to the October symmetry (the Oct low), which the Dow has been repeating since 1932.
Like we said last time, markets have not broken an October low since the great depression. So, though the term great depression is used pretty loosely now, we have yet to pass the major October confirmation.
Bank failures, bankruptcies, 30-70 per cent collapses in indices all seem to be culminating in the anticipated time window ahead. Many indices including the Dow are falling in seven wave structures. This means classic corrective zigzags. Seven waves are corrective structures not impulsive move downs.
Though we understand that seven waves could be extending into nine waves impulsive, which have a more bearish aspect linked to it, the extreme volatilities on many indices suggest otherwise. Many emerging market indices have spiked with 10-year high volatilities suggesting that panic is total and global now. Prices are also nearing the previous four wave conventional supports on some indices, Oil and gold still under supply pressures, dollar continues strength, it is too early for us to let go of the October low hypothesis.
We are in the age of Dow or simply putting the age of global psychology, which does not understand that markets have a limit till where they can collapse unlike the proverbial moon where it can go on the other side. We are in the age of too much information, this is why summaries excite us more than books, and herding is more convenient than trashing the Dow effect.
The Dow composite, just a week back, was the top performer among global indices. So, Dow might have some catching up to do till 10,000 and maybe marginally lower. But, to expect 8,000 in the next few weeks seems a low probability scenario to us.
We are looking at the Japanese Nikkei now, which should give us our first cues regarding potential multi-month global bottom formations in October and not the Dow. Let's see.
